UROP 101 The Intro Entry

UROP 101 The Intro Entry MIT is serious about research. You would think that access to millions of dollars of lab space and equipment would be limited to extremely experienced graduate students and upperclassmen. But fortunately, every MIT student has the opportunity to conduct hands-on research if one has the motivation and dedication. This privilege is mostly a result of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, commonly referred to as UROP, which gives me and my fellow classmates a unique chance to gain valuable research experience and insight into a field of our choice. Each week, I will explore one MIT students unique research project and the insight that he or she has gained from the UROP experience. I hope to highlight the diverse student body and availability of projects around campus while giving a glimpse into the labs of MIT. I arrived at MIT bushy tailed and bright eyed at the prospect of slipping into a lab coat. In high school I was fortunate enough to spend two summers working in the labs of Massachusetts General Hospitals microfabrication facility and I was eager to jump back into the exciting world of discovery. I spent my first few months on campus checking the UROP website and contacting professors who had research projects that I was interested in. After a few interviews and lab tours, I was offered a position in the Chen Lab at MITs Center for Cancer Research studying the delivery of small-interfering RNA (siRNA) in mice. It may seem odd for a student like me, who plans on studying mechanical engineering and brain and cognitive sciences, to join a biology lab. Luckily, this is what the UROP program is all about, exploring new areas and finding your niche. I figured that this would be as good an opportunity as any to figure out if biology is my thing and whether I want to commit the next few years of my life to becoming a scientist. So, why does studying the delivery of siRNA even matter? About ten years ago, researchers noticed that pieces of RNA could be used to degrade messenger RNA in animal and plant cells with the result that scientists could create double stranded RNA to silence genes. Recently, researchers at MIT found siRNAs that inhibited influenza virus production in cultured cells and embryonated chickens. My research is part of a project to use these siRNAs to prevent and treat influenza virus infection in mice. If all goes well, this mouse model can be used to create a therapy for influenza virus infection in humans. An siRNA therapy would be an improvement on existing vaccines since these vaccines are relatively ineffective in children and the elderly and only protect against a limited number of influenza strains. My role in the project is to figure out how to deliver these siRNAs into cells that are infected with the influenza virus by injecting mice using various compounds and injection techniques. I have only been working in the lab for a month, but I have already learned an immense amount about drug delivery, animal surgery, and medicine. I have had to perform many mouse injections and dissections to determine the best way to deliver siRNAs, but I have recognized a love for surgery that I didnt even know existed before my UROP experience. If you choose to come to MIT, I would encourage all of you to have at least one UROP over the course of your four years. There are thousands of areas of research and even more research opportunities; one of them is bound to be right for you. Hopefully, this series will help introduce you to the various research opportunities found around MIT so you will know what to look for come fall.

Most philosophers of the time believed that everything has always been in existence, therefore there is no reason for a creator. Aquinas believed that there needed to be a necessary cause for a universe filled with contingent beings. Aquinas developed a cosmological argument to help explain that the universe did need a creator. In this essay, I will discuss Aquinas cosmological argument, the difference between per se and per accidens causes, and how Aquinas uses this to state that all contingent things in the universe cannot begin a single contingent being, thus a necessary being is required This we call God. In philosophy, there are different types of being. A necessary being is a being that always existed, that will always exist, and that cant not exist. There is contingent being which is a being that could have not existed without the help of something else. An example would be you. You could have not existed without your parents. Aquinas starts his cosmological argument by stating that the world is composed of contingent things meaning that something or someone must have cause the existence. Nothing came from nothing it had to have come from something. There has to be something that caused the contingent beings existence a necessary being which Aquinas calls God. The universe could have not come from nothing something had to set everything in motion for more creation to exist. Aquinas uses the terms per se cause and per accidens to explain the necessity of a necessary being in a universe filled with contingency. The term per se means in and of itself. It alone means it can exist on its own without any help or causation. Per se can exist on its own per accidens cannot, it requires an extraneous circumstance. Using the example of a person taking a rope and pulling a chair, the person causes the motion which is per se. because we have someone or something to pull the chair, it will move. That is considered per se it requires a singular being to cause its motion. Aquinas says this can be seen as an example for the existence of God. The term per accidens means by chance, and cannot exist without any prior causation. Without someone or something to pull the rope, the chair stands up and the rope lays on the ground. Using the rope and chair example, the chair would not move no matter how many ropes you put on it it requires a necessary being. The rope and the chair without movement is nothing. But with something to pull the rope and the chair (God) Ii has movement and suddenly has meaning. This pulling of the rope can be related to when God created the universe, and then there was light as in the book of Genesis states. There is no other explanation for the creation of the universe of contingent beings, because we first needed a necessary being to set things in motion. There were many criticisms towards Aquinas Cosmological Argument,t he first being the Epistemological Objection. The Epistemological Objection essentially states that any claim about God is beyond the limits of human knowledge. This means that no human, or mortal can make a claim or statement on Gods existence, for God is assumed to be the highest level of all beings (according to Augustine and the Great Chain of Being). Since we cannot see God, or know God, it is beyond all human measure and intelligence to make any claims about God. Another criticism for the Cosmological Argument was by Bertrand Russell. He made the claim that the argument commits the fallacy of composition. To commit the Fallacy of Composition means to infer something is true of the whole from the fact that it is true of some part of the whole (meaning like it is half true). Aquinas argument is incomplete because it focuses on only half truths. The example that Russell gave was that every human has a mother, so you can deduce that the human species had a mother. The final criticism we discussed in class was by JCC Smart with his Why not? objection. Smart stated that there is no complete answer or explanation for Gods existence. We may ne ver know who or what created the universe, but its best not to worry about that answer, for it may be nothing at all. The answer to the question Why does anything exist? might very well be, Why not?. Aquinas believed that among the things whose existence needs explanation are contingent beings that depend for their existence upon other beings. What is contingent exists because of the existence of a necessary being. This may also be associated with the term blind faith. These criticisms all have their place. They all tie into the same theme that we may never know if there is a God, and that it is better not to question the creation of the universe and its possible creator. However, Aquinas would challenge these arguments by saying why not believe in something greater than ourselves? We may not know what created the universe but it is better to believe in the existence of a God, than not to believe at all, in my opinion. In fact, to say that the universe does not have a creator, or doubt a creators existence is difficult to imagine. Life, as Aquinas states is contingent, it requires something more to exist a necessary being to start life and matter to exist and this we should call God. To conclude, I side with Aquinas on the statement that God exists. I believe that everything came from something, and it just doesnt make enough sense that the universe came from nothing. The necessary being behind all the contingent has to be God, for there is no other concrete evidence stating that it wa snt just as there is no concrete proof that there is. Its a personal choice to believe or not.

Emily Dickinsons Because I Could Not Stop for Death In Emily Dickinson’s â€Å"Because I could not stop for Death â€Å" (448), the speaker of the poem is a woman who relates about a situation after her death. The speaker personifies death as a polite and considerate gentleman who takes her in a carriage for a romantic journey; however, at the end of this poem, she finishes her expedition realizing that she has died many years ago. The poem contains six quatrains, and does not follow any consistent rhyme scheme. Every line starts with a strong beat and ends up with a weak beat. The first and third lines in each stanza have iambic tetrameter, but the second and fourth lines do not contain any consistent meter. The feet generate a rhythm†¦show more content†¦She is so naà ¯ve and adolescent that she leaves her worldly activities and gets ready to go out and spend time with her boyfriend. For this week’s reading, we read the article â€Å"Critical race and LatCrit theory and method: Counter-storytelling† by Daniel G. Solorzano and Tara J. Yosso. Throughout the reading, it emphasizes the racial problem that Chicana and Chicano undergraduate and graduate are facing under the educational system. In order to understand more about their experiences, the authors divided the reading into three different steps. First of all, they defined the meaning of critical race theory. The employees at Best Snacks feel that leadership does not value their opinions and has not created an environment open for innovation and creativity. First, instead of promoting organizational learning, management can select a few employees for individual learning. Managers would select employees to serve on special teams. Another alternative is for previous marketing methods to be revisited in an effort to appeal to the standard customer base. The third alternative identified is to make no radical changes, choosing to stick with incremental or semi-radical innovation. By utilizing incremental innovation, Best Snacks can wring out as much value as possible from existing products or services without making significant changes or major investments. Evaluate the Alternatives In Table three there were two goals that were ranked at a number five. The first goal, design new marketing methods that are completely different from those of the past was chosen to stimulate creativity within the organization. Best Snacks has already spent and ample amount of time redeveloping ideas of the past and needs a fresh approach to capturing their audience. The second goal that was ranked at a number five is for the management to promote organizational wide learning. One of the reasons Best Snacks is in the position they’re in is because at some point the organization stopped learning. Management began to discourage the innovation and creativity that once the key to the company’s success. As a result, the entire team at Best Snacks; employees as well as management need to go back to square one in learning the organization, its customers and products. Narrowed List of Alternatives The best alternative chosen are to revisit the previous marketing methods to capture some of the past product success, and to implement semi-radical change. Although it is clear based on the goals that it would be best for Best Snacks to make a complete 360 degree turn around with their business structure and approach to marketing, the cost of doing so could defeat take a toll on the company’s finances due to its declining sales. As a result, it may be better for the organization to take things slow implementing only a semi-radical change program and revamping some of the previous marketing methods. In selecting just a few employees, the leadership does not tackle the real issue of ensuring that innovation is stimulated on an organizational wide scale. It seems that an incremental change approach is what put Best Snacks in the position that they are in now. In only considering the bottom line while ignoring the significant changes that needed to be made in the product lines and processes has cost the organization in sales. With both alternative, Best Snacks runs the likely chance that no changes will be made, leaving the organization to continue its decline. Make the Decision Best Snacks will utilize radical innovation to develop customized, strategic marketing plans for their current product lines and formulate teams within the organization to design new products. This report mainly deals with the average weekly earnings in Australia. Assessing the changes in the weekly earnings over time is the primary aim of this study. For the purpose of this research, the data has been collected from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) website on the average weekly income. Data on the male and female weekly income, weekly income of the private and the public sector have been collected from the website for the last 7 years. The data that has to be analysed has been obtained from the ABS website (abs.gov.au 2018). Analysis has been conducted on the average weekly income between male and female employees. Comparison have also been conducted on the average weekly incomes of the private and the public sector over the past 7 years. The dataset contains information about the average weekly incomes from March 2011 to November 2017. From the graph given in figure 1, it can be seen clearly that over the last 7 years, there has been significant increase in the average weekly income for both the male and the female employees but the weekly income of the male employees have always been higher than that of the female employees. The average earnings for the male employees is $3151.71 and that of the female employees is $881.76. There is a 4.27 percent variation in the male earnings and 5.95 percent variation in the female earnings. The next comparison is done between the average weekly incomes of the private sector and the public sector. From the graph given in figure 2, it can be seen clearly that over the last 7 years, there has been significant increase in the average weekly income for both the private sector and the public sector but the weekly income of the public sector has always been higher than the weekly income of the private sector. The average earnings for the public sector is $1306.79 and that of the private sector is $1071.33. There is a 5.82 percent variation in the weekly earnings of the private sector and 4.66 percent variation in the weekly earnings of the public sector. Time Series and Index Number Analysis The weekly earnings of the total population of Australia have been increasing rapidly. From May 2011 to November 2011, the weekly earnings have increased by 1.79 percent. From November 2011 to May 2012, the increase in the average weekly earnings have been 1.85 percent, which is higher than the last 6 months. From May 2012 to November 2012, the increase in the average weekly earnings have been 2.60 percent, which is higher than the last 6 months. From November 2012 to May 2013, the increase in the average weekly earnings have been 2.14 percent, which is less than the last 6 months. Thus, the growth rate had decreased between November 2012 and May 2013. From May 2013 to November 2013, the increase in the average weekly earnings have been 0.83 percent, which is extremely less than the last 6 months. Thus, the growth rate had decreased a lot between May 2013 and November 2013. Again from November 2013 to May 2014, the increase in the average weekly earnings have been 0.78 percent, which is again less than the last 6 months. Thus, the growth rate had decreased again between November 2013 and May 2014. Again from May 2014 to November 2014, the increase in the average weekly earnings have been 0.51 percent, which is again less than the last 6 months. It is the right of every person to participate in the community welfare and get benefits from there. Investigating The Factors Which Affect The Resista Essays Investigating The Factors Which Affect The Resistance Of A Piece Of Putty resistance Of a piece of resistance putty Planning: This investigation is designed to look into the resistance of different materials, in this case, resistance putty in the form of wires, and their conducting capability in different shapes. We must bear in mind though that different thickness and length of the putty used to make up the wire itself will affect the electric conduction capability. Therefore, the factors are; The thickness of the putty e.g. 1mm, 2mm, 3mm in diameter or 1 cm in diameter And also The length of the putty e.g.25cm, 50cm, 75cm long. The experiment will require both the readings of voltage and current in order to produce the value of resistance according to the formula; R= V/ I The current flowing through the wire will be recorded to the nearest 0.01A, using an ammeter placed in series with the circuit. The voltage across the putty will also be measured and recorded to the nearest 0.01V, using a voltmeter placed parallel across the putty. To make it a fair test, the cell terminals will be reversed after the first readings, so that the current would flow in the opposite direction, and then be recorded down again to give repeat readings. The 2 readings for (I) or current will then be averaged, and the 2 readings for (V) or voltage will also be averaged. So that I could calculate the resistance by using the formula: R=V / I (resistance = voltage/current) or (resistance potential difference across the wire/current through the wire) The putty will be 20cm long. Making sure that this is a fair test and experiment, the putty will have a diameter of a one-penny coin at all times. We use the one penny coin, because it will keep the putty even, and so that the crocodile clips which will be placed at each end of the putty wont squash the ends of the putty. The experiment will be repeated 10 times altogether, shorting the wire 2cm each time, to give a range of 20cm to 2cm. Safety precautions: Make sure that the circuit is properly connected before turning the power supply on, and do not touch the apparatus, especially the tested wire, in case the putty, until the power is switched off. The changing of the putty should only occur when the power is off. Do not carry out the experiment in wet areas, as water is a very good conductor. Do not switch on the power pack when there is no resistant wire (putty) and do not turn the power supply up too high, because normal laboratory wires may melt, and so might the putty. Do not handle experiment with wet hands. Place asbestos mat underneath putty for safety. Place a variable resistor in the circuit for safety to ensure that the current did not remain too large, but remained set at the same value throughout the experiment to ensure that the test was fair. Prediction: The factor I am investigating for this experiment is the length. The length will change throughout the experiment but not the area. I predict that when the length of the putty increases, so wills the resistance. I also think that the length of the putty will be directly proportional to the resistance of the putty, which means that there will be a direct relationship. So, overall, when the length of the putty gets bigger the resistance will get bigger too. Theory: I chose my prediction because; longer wires will cause an increase in resistance, because the electrons have to travel past more atoms and collisions than they do in shorter wires, in this case the putty. This means that it will take a longer time for electrons to past through a long piece of putty than a short piece of putty, and that is why there will be a big value in resistance. (The longer the putty the bigger the resistance). Also, long thin putty has more resistance than a short thick one of the same material. Also, Ohms law states that for a wire under constant physical conditions, the current is proportional to the voltage. This is also equivalent to stating that resistance is constant.
